Spain - Lifestyle Overview
After France, Spain is the largest country in Europe but
with just over 40 million people, it is one the least
densely populated. With its dramatic, ever changing
landscape, it has much to offer in the way of cuisine,
climate, outdoor living, lively entertainment, shopping,
scenery and culture. Over 1.2 million foreigners have chosen
to settle and buy property in Spain; the Country now attracts more than 52
million visitors each year. 640,000 new homes were built in
2004 and predictions show that 2 million Spanish homes will have to
be built over the next 6 years to meet demand.
Overseas investment including significant funding from
the EU has had a positive impact on the infrastructure of
the Country including transportation, communication,
building, health and education. Indeed Spain has a first
rate public health system and excellent educational
facilities. Education is compulsory until age 16, many
students continue their studies at one of the fifty or so
Universities; over 95% of the population over 15 years old
are literate.

The Spanish are a very friendly, family orientated nation;
they are also extremely proud of their country and heritage
and know how to enjoy life. There are many adventures to
choose from including skiing in the Pyrenees, Aragon,
Andorra and Sierra Nevada, horse riding, trekking and
mountain biking plus kite surfing and windsurfing in wild
and rugged Costa de la Luz. Canoeing and white water rafting
in NW Spain are popular activities. Sailing, fishing, scuba
diving, snorkelling……… and with the huge number of
championship golf courses, golfers, like water sports
enthusiasts are spoiled for choice!
Bullfighting is a popular “sport” throughout Spain with
most bullfights taking place on the weekend. The running of
the bulls through the town of Pamplona is a world renowned,
most spectacular event and certainly not for the faint
hearted! Colourful fiestas bursting with energy, music
festivals, outdoor concerts………. the Spanish love to have fun
and celebrate, and they are very good at it!
There are excellent outdoor markets, exquisite craft
shops and small stores offering some great bargains.
Beautiful pottery and ceramic pieces, inexpensive leather
goods, rugs, shoes and clothes are easy to find.
The Spanish enjoy a great social life, much of which
revolves around bustling cafes and bars. With a choice of
restaurants catering for every taste and budget, Spanish
cuisine brings to mind paella, gazpacho soup and mouth
watering tapas. Not forgetting the excellent choice of
Spanish wines and, best of all, the Sangria! Spain boasts
some of the best nightlife in Europe and there’s something
for everyone.
